7pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Compass: Story or Speech Crime? Storytelling in 18th Century China with Xun Liu. Xun Liu, a freelance literary and academic translator and PhD candidate in the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies, explores the unique narrative styles employed by C18th writers, and the socio-political and cultural background of this fascinating era of the High-Qing Era of ‘literary inquisition’ – also known as ‘speech crime’. 11am: International Literature Festival Dublin – Bumbum Bees, Toilet Sharks and Things That Go Bump in the Night with Chris Judge. Age 3+. 5pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Brian Dillon: On Style. Following on from his acclaimed collection of essays on the essay–Essayism, and coinciding with his new book Suppose A Sentence, Words Ireland has commissioned a short lecture from Brian Dillon on one of his favourite topics to return to, Style. 6pm: Belfast International Arts Festival; Call Nina! A documentary on the importance of the arts as a tool for debate and change. A modern take on intersectionality and feminism, from a black woman’s perspective, as the documentary follows Josette Bushell-Mingo (OBE) working with her internationally acclaimed set “A story about me and Nina” (Unity Theater UK / National Theatre Swe) where she intimately embodies her own artistry in relation to the American artist/activist, Nina Simone. 6pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Maggie O’Farrell Knows Where Snow Angels Go. Age 8+ and adults. Best-selling and award-winning author Maggie O’Farrell joins Tall Tales with her first children’s book, Where Snow Angels Go. Maggie O’Farrell and Daniela Terrazziniis are in conversation with Patricia Forde, award winning writer and Chairperson of Children’s Books Ireland. €5, book here

7pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Compass: Writing Home – The New Irish Poets. Writing Home, edited by Pat Boran and Chiamaka Enyi-Amadi, is a major new anthology of writing from Ireland that acknowledges and celebrates the contribution of those whose roots lie outside of the country. Contributors have brought new energy and perspectives to a subject that has long featured in writing from Ireland, creating a fresh new portrait of a changing country and a changing world. 8pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Let’s Do His Stupid Idea…: Patrick Freyne in conversation with Emilie Pine. Patrick Freyne has tried a lot of stupid ideas in his life. 8pm: Belfast International Arts Festival; Ulster Orchestra Chamber Ensemble | Belfast Music Society Northern Lights Mini-Fest. 6pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Just Us: An American Conversation with Claudia Rankine. Poet, essayist and playwright Claudia Rankine is one of the most important contemporary creative writers and scholars on questions of race and identity. 7pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Poetry Ireland: Introductions Series. Established in 1989 by poet Theo Dorgan, Poetry Ireland’s Introductions Series offers exciting opportunities for talented, emerging poets to showcase their work. This showcase will be accompanied by an ebook of the poets’ work, available as a free download during the festival. 8pm: International Literature Festival Dublin – Unfolding Maps: A Celebration of Tim Robinson. Join ILFDublin for a very special celebration of the life and work of Tim Robinson, the English writer, cartographer, mathematician, artist and illustrator who spent more than 40 years chronicling the west of Ireland. Fintan O’Toole is joined by some of Tim Robinson’s friends and collaborators; poet Moya Cannon, photographer Nicolas Fève, and Robert Macfarlane, to discuss his influence on their own work, whether written or visual, and their meetings and collaborations with him across the Irish landscape. €5, book here

9am: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Michael Chambers: From Rebels To The Moon Goddess: A journey through the Nephin Beg Mountains. Exploring the lands of his youth and a desire to uncover hidden treasures lead Michael to discover priceless artefacts. His findings remained undisturbed for thousands of years and are a window into some of the rituals of ancient Ireland. FREE, book here

10am – 9am: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Kate McAney: Woodlands and ruins under dark skies – why County Mayo is so important for the lesser horseshoe bat. “In my talk I will introduce you to the animal that has accompanied me on my night shifts, the lesser horseshoe bat. You will see what it looks like, hear what it sounds like and learn about the challenges it faces to survive in Ireland today. It is at its most northerly worldwide distribution point in Mayo and I will describe why the county is so important for this little bat. I will also disclose what it has in common with several internationally acclaimed writers and other literary figures!” FREE, book here

11am: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Fred Watson and Marnie Ogg: Noctis Australis. From the first nations people, to the astrophysicists of today, Australia has been the home of stargazers for tens of thousands of years. The inky black continent of Australia is truly embracing the asset of darkness not just from world-class scientific endeavours, but from the perspectives of tourism, human health and environmental well being. Join Marnie Ogg, (Dark Sky Defender and CEO of the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance), and her partner Fred Watson (Australia’s Astronomer at Large) as they share everything from the Emu in the Sky to the Square Kilometer Array. 12pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival –Declan Holmes: The History of Light – Is it a wave or a particle? This talk is a story of how scientists discovered what light really is and along the way found different forms of light from infrared heat to microwaves. The history of light is a fight between waves and particles that ends with the conclusion that it is both in one of the greatest science theories of all time, Quantum Mechanics. We will explore how the different types of light are used in astronomy and we will also measure the speed of light using a chocolate bar and a microwave oven. FREE, book here

2pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Terry Moseley and Adam Jeffers: Introducing OM Dark Sky Park & Observatory. “Welcome to Northern Irelands First Dark Sky Park & Observatory. We will discuss our links with archaeology at Beaghmore Stone Circles, where many believe this was our first Observatory linking it to OM Observatory.” Adam Jeffers, a local amateur astronomer will showcase fantastic images taken from the Dark Sky Park. 3pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Éanna ní Lamhna in conversation with Dara McAnulty. Join renowned broadcaster and naturalist Éanna ní Lamhna as she chats with Dara McAnulty, who became the youngest ever winner of a major literary prize when he won the 2020 Wainwright Prize for nature writing. 4pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Clodagh Doyle: Masks and Mischief – Irish Halloween Traditions. The winter festival of Hallowe’en has traditionally been associated with death and the supernatural. There was a festive meal, games, masks, guising, protection and lots of mischief.
The Irish Folklife Collection of the National Museum of Ireland has a wonder collection of objects associated with Halloween and a permanent exhibition in Turlough, Co. Mayo. The talk on the folklore of Samhain will be supported by a Powerpoint presentation with images of the museum artefacts and archival images and film. FREE, book here

4pm: Belfast International Arts Festival presents Bryan Washington and Paul Mendez. Two debut writers join forces to talk to the Festival about race and sexuality from different cultural perspectives. Hosted by John Self. FREE, donations welcome. Book here

5pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Dr. Tyler Nordgren: See the Milky Way, Science and Art in Astro Activism. Art has been used to convey scientific ideas as well as promote ecological conservation. Today, astrophotography and astronomical artwork are being used to promote awareness of light pollution and conservation of dark skies around the world. FREE, book here

7pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Franck Séguin & Jessica C. Garreau: Nightscapes of Photo NightScape Awards. After a short summary of the photographic history of nocturnal landscapes, we will present and detail the 9 awarded-winners of the Photo NightScape Awards 2020. 7pm: Belfast International Arts Festival presents Sebastian Barry and Sarah Moss. Sebastian Barry joins multi-award winning novelist Sarah Moss at an event discussing their highly-anticipated new fiction. FREE, donations welcome. Book here

8pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Kerem Asfuroglu: The Vision. At no point in our history, had we produced, consumed and wasted so much light. Why must light come at the cost of eradicating darkness? Whilst exploring the reasons behind the modern society’s obsession with light, the talk will emphasise the importance of the collective vision and working with communities in tackling light pollution through the currently ongoing example of Presteigne Dark Sky Masterplan. 9pm: Mayo Dark Sky Festival – Dr Niall Smith: A Virtual Tour of the Night Sky. “I will use the freely-available STELLARIUM application to take participants on a virtual tour of what can be seen at present in the night sky and build some of the science behind what we know of the selected objects. This presentation will assume no prior knowledge of the heavens above, but hopefully there will be something of interest for the novice and experienced alike! If the skies are clear, participants should be able to go outside and see with their own eyes what we have seen virtually. Finally, I will note why I think it’s so important that we preserve our dark skies as much as possible.” FREE, book here

9.30pm: The Model Emerging; Má Deirim. Online via Facebook Live. A collaboration between visual artist Nic Flanagan and musician/composer Eoin Kilfeather. This 25 minute performance is an instinctive and progressive interdisciplinary conversation carried out with parallel manuscripts for performer and musician, each composing their score using motifs of movement and sound inspired by the gestures of the other. 1pm: Informal Music Afternoon at the Model Theatre, Sligo with Sligo Baroque Orchestra. Online via Facebook Live. Monthly event where an eclectic mix of music is performed in an informal, welcoming format. The ideas behind the concerts are to introduce concert-goers to music that might be outside their normal listening repertoire; to develop a new audience for chamber music of all types; and to provide a new platform for instrumentalists from the Sligo area and beyond. Monday, 9th November

Hayley Coleman Bridal Make-up Workshop (9th – 15th November, Monday, Wednesday and Friday) . Hayley brings  you her bridal workshop online from the comfort of your own home. If you are a Bride to be, a bridesmaid or someone that loves all things bridal makeup this workshop is for you. There will be three lessons. A lesson on a Blonde, Brunette and also one for Red hair. The lessons will be up on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm and a live Q & A on Sunday to answer all things bridal. 7pm, Sligo Science Festival 2020: Professor Miodownik – Delightful and Dangerous Liquids. While solid materials are humanity’s faithful friend, taking on the permanent shapes of clothes, shoes, phones, cars, and indeed airports, liquids are fluid; they will take on any shape, but only while contained. When not contained, they are always on the move, seeping, corroding, dripping, and escaping our control. When we put a solid material somewhere it stays there, often doing something very useful, like holding up a building or supplying electricity for a whole community. Liquids on the other hand are anarchic; they have a knack for destroying things. But they are wonderful too, wine, beer, tea, and coffee are all remarkable liquids. This talk is a journey into the realms of the strange, disruptive, sometimes corrosive, often delightful, sometimes toxic, but always interesting, liquids. FREE, book here

7pm, Sligo Science Festival 2020: Chemistry for a Cleaner World. Professor Tom Welton, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Imperial College London and President of the Royal Society of Chemistry, is the world’s first Professor of Sustainable Chemistry. Our modern way of life is dependent on the products of the synthetic chemicals industries. However, this can also have considerable downsides, especially the pollution that comes from casually discarding these without thought to where they end up in the environment. In this talk he will look at combining our knowledge of chemistry with some simple tips, so that we can all contribute to a cleaner world. FREE, book here

7pm, Sligo Science Festival 2020: Science Made Simple: It’s Only Water… Or Is It? This exciting, interactive science show explores all the amazing properties of water. Brought to you in the form of a trick and quiz show that involves the audience. We investigate all the things water can do. Can we squash it? Explode it? What happens when you boil water in space? 7pm, Sligo Science Festival 2020: Some Recent Revelations at the Carrowkeel passage tomb complex.

The dramatically located Neolithic passage tombs at Carrowkeel in south County Sligo have received little archaeological attention since excavations were carried out there in 1911.

However, a range of scientific analyses have been carried out in the last number of years that have significantly broadened our knowledge regarding the chronology, landscape and rituals associated with the monuments there. This talk by archaeologist  Sam Moore discusses these various findings and will focus on the results of the study of the human remains from Carrowkeel found during the 1911 excavations. 7pm, Sligo Science Festival 2020: Cantus Vespertilio – Hidden Sounds. Dr. Iain McCurdy is a lecturer in music at Maynooth University, specialising in electroacoustic composition, electronic music, sound design and field recording. Maynooth is famous for its choirs, both in the University and in St. Patricks College seminary. Cantus Vespertilio is a project which aims to reveal the hidden choir of bats that chorus during the summer months and into the autumn and find their musicality that speaks to humans. Ireland’s bats produce sound that is inaudible to humans, being beyond the highest pitches that we can perceive. Dr McCurdy will show viewers how using specialised detecting, microphones and recording equipment to capture these sounds and through the use of sound processing techniques, make them audible to humans, revealing a panoply of chirps, warbles, slides and rhythms. Sligo Science Festival 2020: Becoming a Bi-Planetary Species. Fifty years after NASA’s Apollo Moon landings, other space agencies and private companies around the world are heading back to the Moon. Writer and filmmaker Professor Christopher Riley explores the events, discoveries and technological advances which are propelling them there. Drawing on clips from his multi-award winning films, Chris will tell the story of how human ingenuity has hacked physics to propel us off Earth, on our way to becoming a spacefaring civilization. 8pm, Sligo Science Festival 2020: Overview of Forensic Autopsy Pathology, Critical Forensic Basics and Case Studies with Dr. Paul Hartel,MD. An engaging talk by Dr. Paul Hartel. Dr. Hartel is Consultant Histopathologist at Sligo University Hospital and Medical Director of Clinical Laboratory Medicine with Grafton City and Sistersville General Hospitals in West Virginia, USA.
